Lobert’s earliest works were informed by the appearance of three genderless silhouettes, which would ultimately disappear behind layers of color and paint, their mysterious presence a mere whisper. In this work, unusually, we find just one solitary figure that is only halfway obscured by a combustion of kaleidoscopic hues, drips, and spurts. It’s as if the artist’s reliance on figuration to inform a painterly confidence is becoming no longer necessary in her maturing voice. Bravely letting a familiar totem dissipate into the past, she is experimenting anew.
