If the first four pieces of Bare Consciousness denoted a visual struggle to leave behind the artist’s signature silhouette paintings, this work represents the moment when Lobert has successfully fled that battle and now reopens her emotional core to reveal a new identity. Embers of an orange fire burn below an ornery mash of blue and green strokes, black ash puffs rising up and outward from the canvas. A bonfire smothered and simmering slowly while a murky green line across the lower horizon lays a bed of new growth. A timidly scratched “E” can be seen at the mid right-hand side, partially obscured, yet there is no shyness in the blunt black “Cecile” in the lower right-hand corner. A shift has occurred. The artist fully claims her presence.
