Composed while Lobert chanted “rouge, rouge,” this composition marks the first monochromatic work by the artist. A myriad techniques and gestural brushstrokes are articulated to explore multiple interpretations of the singular red. What results is a frenzied pitch bringing many passionate evocations to mind from fresh flush to deep blush to torrid fever to tempestuous mood in shades revealed across the light and dark gradient. This direct dialogue with color mingled with the normally non-verbal artist’s verbalization of its name may lend insight toward the experience of emotion as color.
