The familiar shapes and construction in this fourth variation of the United Arab Emirates flag depart sharply from any recognition, bringing only its colors into a blustery blend. Lobert’s jubilation takes hold in red, black, white and green strokes that mark her classic method of reusing brushes between paint colors without first stripping them of the previous hues. This creates unplumbed tones and layers full of depth and surprise as the artist’s love of the country shines through, the glowing brightness central to the composition bringing light in to dance with the shimmering tufts of gold leaf.
