Two months into lockdown, Lobert created this climactic work amongst an intensifying personal angst, frequent tantrums, and burgeoning bouts with anger. The piece was originally painted in various colors and left ignored, until one night, in secret, the artist rose from bed to cover it in black, before adding an aggression in red like wisps of a hand, or a cry for help from the murky depths of the unconscious. As one of the largest paintings in her oeuvre, it demands recognition of an existential crisis while dramatically representing creativity’s cathartic force.
