A departure from prior works’ dominant blues, this piece introduces black, violet, and Lobert’s classic use of white paint, which she enjoys slathering atop previous colors rather than relying on the natural tone of the canvas. Exuberantly multilayered, we get a glimpse of the artist’s unfiltered, raw authenticity in the aggressive slashes, asymmetrical constructions, drips, and splashes. A genuine compulsion to free the internal is evoked in this portrait of gleeful mania and unmeasured strokes; energy desperate for release and color as a tool for bringing one up from the dark.
